Disko Bay is proud to present Maputo Diary, a deeply personal and visually arresting monograph by award-winning Danish photographer and filmmaker Ditte Haarløv Johnsen. Part memoir, part visual archive, Maputo Diary is a testament to what can emerge from decades of returning to the same people and place with trust, care, and commitment.
The book brings together 25 years of photographic work from Mozambique’s capital, Maputo – the city where Haarløv Johnsen grew up after her family moved there following the country’s independence. Through 121 photographs, accompanied by diary notes and newly written texts, Maputo Diary unfolds as an intimate chronicle of family, friendships, love, and loss across the many layers of the city’s social fabric. Spanning moments of celebration, hardship, tenderness, and everyday life, Haarløv Johnsen reflects Mozambique’s changing history through the lives of the people she has known over time.
At the heart of Maputo Diary is her enduring friendship with the “Manas” (“Sisters”), a close-knit community of transgender women who became central figures in both her life and her work, many of whom are no longer alive. Their stories form the emotional core of a book that is both a personal search for belonging and a universal meditation on intimacy, resilience, and remembrance.

Ditte Haarløv Johnsen (b. 1977) is an award-winning Danish documentary photographer and filmmaker. She has studied at the National Film School of Denmark, Ryerson University in Canada and Fatamorgana – The Danish School of Art Photography. Her award-winning documentary films have been shown at numerous international festivals and the series Maputo Diary has been exhibited in various stages at Brandts, Odense (2006), Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art, Helsinki (2010), Galleri Image, Aarhus (2011), Fotografisk Center, Copenhagen (2013), LaChambre, Strasbourg (2018), The Royal Danish Library, Copenhagen (2021) and Le Centre Culturel Franco-Mozambicain, Mozambique (2024).
